Good Eats — 09 July 2012

For breakfast, we cover a lot of ground. Some mornings you’ll find us feasting on steak & eggs (double that side of hashbrowns, please), and some mornings we’re behaving ourselves with a nice fruit smoothie. But, having roots on the East Coast and having grown up in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood means two things: We know our bagels and we eat the hell out of ‘em.

After years of being underwhelmed by the “next great bagel” in town (we stopped speaking to the friend who told us K&Z’s was worth it), we finally have something that resembles a quality bagel. Bowery Bagels in China Town is now serving up piping hot bagels that scream New York, with schmears that whisper Portland.

As it turns out, this future bagel empresario (trust us), Michael Madigan, made his way to Portland from New York years ago. Why he’s sat on the secret for so long, we don’t know. And we won’t begrudge him as long he makes with more bagels.
