The photographic arms race is in full swing, with good cameras easily breaking the thousand dollar cost barrier. The sad part is, all of that technology and one of those zeros are often wasted on us nonprofessionals.

Starting at $399, the Lytro is a new kind of camera. It captures a scene’s complete light spectrum and uses technology—or magic for those of us who opted to study humanities—to allow the user to focus and colorize the picture after the fact. Sound interesting? Check it out.
